Empowering High-Rise Safety: Training the Front Line on Fire Safety & Code Compliance
In the heart of Toronto’s skyline, two of the city’s tallest residential towers — 72-storey and 68 storey high-rises — have taken a bold step forward in prioritizing life safety. We are proud to recognize the recent completion of comprehensive fire safety training for the building’s supervisory staff, the very individuals responsible for implementing the building’s approved Fire Safety Plan.
Under the Ontario Fire Code, supervisory staff must be trained to carry out specific roles in the event of a fire emergency. But true safety goes beyond regulation—it’s about understanding, confidence, and readiness - before the next fire alarm.
These frontline leaders, made up of mostly Security personnel, are now equipped with:
- A deep understanding of the Ontario Fire Code and its implications in high-rise environments
- The ability to confidently activate and implement fire safety procedures under pressure
- Knowledge of evacuation protocols, alarm system operations, and coordination with first responders
- The tools to identify fire hazards and take preventive action before an emergency occurs
As we’ve emphasized in National Life Safety Group’s recent article, "Empowering Building Owners: Fire Safety Training as a Responsibility, Not Just Compliance," fire safety isn’t just about meeting code—it’s about recognizing the duty of care building owners and managers have toward their residents, visitors, and staff.
“Our buildings are only as strong as the team that supports them. This training was an investment in both life safety and professional development—ensuring our supervisory staff are not only prepared to implement the Fire Safety Plan but are also growing as confident, capable leaders in critical situations” says Melody Roche, General Manager - MENRES Property Management.
In a high-rise building, every second counts, and every decision matters. That’s why training the people who will be the first to act is critical. This recent session not only fulfills legal requirements—it also reinforces a culture of preparedness, leadership, and responsibility.
To the supervisory team of this towering landmark: congratulations on completing this essential training. Your dedication is a powerful reminder that fire safety starts with people—and that informed, trained personnel are our greatest asset in an emergency.
